Description
The Regional Energy Research Center (REKK), operating within Corvinus University’s historic Fővámpalota, required a contemporary workspace to accommodate its expanding team and support small-group collaboration. The redesign draws on the building’s neo-renaissance interiors by Ybl Miklós, transforming a series of dark, compartmentalized rooms into a unified, light-filled space. The original flooring was restored and bleached to enhance natural light from the irregularly placed arched windows. Outdated built-ins were removed, allowing the space to breathe. Bold new insertions—most notably a neon red reception structure—introduce spatial hierarchy and orientation. This U-shaped volume also encloses two soundproof work pods, creating zones of retreat within the open plan. A red-black palette runs throughout, delineating functions and animating the otherwise neutral envelope. Heavy projection drapes double as acoustic partitions; anthracite walls define distinct use zones. The loose spatial system fosters both collaboration and individual focus, offering spaces for standing work, informal meetings, or quiet moments by the window. The result is a carefully balanced environment where heritage and contemporary working culture coexist.
