Description

This design was developed as part of an invited competition for the expansion of the Nagyboldogasszony-templom in Nagykovácsi, addressing the growing number of parishioners who can no longer be accommodated during Sunday masses and major celebrations. The proposal aimed to offer not only a functional solution, but a spiritual and communal one — creating an inclusive, enduring space that reflects contemporary needs. The concept carefully balanced practical expansion with respect for the church’s heritage, the preservation of the surrounding old-growth trees, and the Catholic Church’s broader mission to engage with the modern world. The community’s flexible responses during the pandemic — such as outdoor loudspeakers and online services — served as key inspiration. Rather than a bold architectural statement, the project envisioned a sensitive extension that integrates with the existing structure while opening the church to a more generous and welcoming future.
